Seismic Hazard and Vulnerability Mapping and
Risk Assessment of Rangamati, Bandarban and
Khagrachari Municipalities, Bangladesh
August 2009 to April 2010
ADPC is providing technical
assistance for seismic risk assessment for
Rangamati, Bandarban and Khagrachari
Municipalities.
Bangladesh is susceptible to
damaging earthquakes, having had several
significant earthquake events recorded in the
past few hundred years. In 2003 an earthquake
magnitude of Mw=5.7 hit the region and damaged a
good number of structures in the districts of
Rangamati, Chittagong and Bandarban. These urban
centers are fast growing and influence the
economic developments of much of the country. It
is therefore essential to have a realistic
understanding of the nature, severity and
consequences of likely damage/loss.
This project is funded by the
Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Facility
(CHTDF) of United Nations Development
Program. The facility initiated holistic
development and peace building through
different programs, including the Earthquake
Risk Reduction Programme (ERRP) that intends
to build a resilient community to cope with
earthquakes.
