Projects under the Earthquake and Tsunami Preparedness Component

Contingency Planning with regard to Earthquake hazard for Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet City

Contingency planning with regard to earthquake hazard will be to develop a comprehensive geo-hazard risk reduction “Contingency Planning” strategy that is linked to an easy implementation framework to be able to address the current needs and issues, which would be implacable at all the national, city and agency level and cover all the levels of disaster risk management from preparedness to response.

The SOW under the proposed project on Contingency planning with regard to earthquake hazard is comprised of two main activities:

  • Activity I: Determine status of contingency planning and design of interim contingency plan

  • Activity II: Turn interim contingency plans into final versions (using maps for selected urban areas that highlight earthquake-vulnerable school/hospital/emergency response and control buildings etc.)

Seismic Hazard & Vulnerability Mapping

The objective of Seismic Hazard & Vulnerability Mapping is mainly to develop seismic hazard maps, and vulnerability maps for the critical infrastructure as well as the building stocks of Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet city corporation areas. The study will also undertake damage estimation for scenario events so as to assess damage probabilities and provide informed insight about the risks involved.

The Scope of Work consists of four main, complementary activities. They are listed as follows:

  1. Prepare regional and local geological fault maps

  2. Prepare engineering geological maps for three cities (Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet city corporations) including the areas under future expansion.

  3. Prepare seismic hazard maps for three cities by providing seismic, geological and ground conditions.

  4. Prepare seismic vulnerability and risk maps for three cities by providing information on vulnerability and risk conditions of critical infrastructure.

Training, Advocacy and Awareness

Training, advocacy and Awareness against earthquake and Tsunami would be to develop trainings, drills, advocacy and awareness in different cross-section of the people from government officials to community level in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet City Corporation including their area under future expansions.

The Scope of Work of the Project; under the proposed project on Training, advocacy and Awareness against earthquake and tsunami hazard is comprised of eight main activities:

  • Activity I: Decision makers and planners are educated on contingency plan and seismic hazard maps

  • Activity II: Safety and evacuation training for the school children and teachers

  • Activity III: Training to the managers of critical infrastructures on fire safety and evacuation

  • Activity IV: Aware and educate the religious leaders against earthquake dangers

  • Activity V: Training for masons and bar-binders

  • Activity VI: Training on tsunami vulnerability to the decision makers/planners

  • Activity VII: Preparation of documentary to develop awareness of earthquake hazard and vulnerability

  • Activity VIII: Production and dissemination of posters and leaflet on earthquake vulnerability reduction measures
