Urban Seismic Risk Project in the news

Round Table Meeting on Development of Contingency Plan, Dhaka, 17 February 2008 

A Round Table Meeting on Development of Contingency Plan for Major Cities in Bangladesh was held at Hotel Pan Pacific Sonargaon, Dhaka, Bangladesh on 17 February 2008.  The round table meeting was presided over by Mr. Abdul Bari Khan, Additional Secretary Ministry of Food and Disaster Management of Bangladesh Government.  Dr. Bhichit Rattakul, Executive Director of ADPC was present as Special guest.  Among others, Mr. Ian Rector, Chief Technical Advisor of CDMP, Br. Gen. Abu Nayeem (Md.) Shahidullah Director General, Directorate of Fire Service and Civil Defense, Bangladesh, Mr. Saidur Rahman, Director of BDPC, Mr. Arambepola, Director of UDRM, ADPC and Mr. Aloysius J. Rego, Director of DMS, ADPC was present in the meeting. About 45 experts and officials from 23 agencies and organization participated the meeting.

Establishment of Office in Dhaka, 16 February 2008 

ADPC has opened an office in Dhaka, Bangladesh for smooth functioning of the project.  The office went under operation on 16 February 2008 through an inaugural session where Dr. Bhichit Rattakul, Executive Director of ADPC was present as chief guest.  Among others Mr. Ian Rector, Chief Technical Advisor of CDMP, Mr. Saidur Rahman, Director of BDPC, Mr. Arambepola, Director of UDRM, ADPC and Mr. Aloysius J. Rego, Director of DMS, ADPC was present during the office inauguration.

Partner Meeting to finalize Vulnerability Assessment Methodology, Bangkok, 12 to 13 February 2008  

A meeting was held to finalize the Vulnerability Assessment Methodology and to identify level of involvement of each counter part organization based on the proposed methodology.  The meeting was held at AIT, headed by Dr. Pennung Waunitchai, who he the team leader of the Vulnerability Assessment component.  Participants were from all relevant partner organizations including National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET), Nepal, BUET, CUET & Shylhet University.

On the second day of the meeting, a detail discussion was held on issues related to Contracts between each organization & ADPC based on the level of involvement of each organization

Technical Advisory Group Meeting, Dhaka, 14 January 2008

First Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meeting of the project to present Inception Report, held on January 14th 2008 at CDMP office in Dhaka.

  1. Inception report on Seismic hazard and vulnerability mapping was presented by Mr. Fumio Kaneko, Engineering Seismologist of OIC, Dr. Pennung Warnitchai, Structural Engineer of AIT.
  1. Training, advocacy and awareness with regards to Earthquake and tsunami hazard and Contingency Planning for Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet city corporation areas were presented by and Ms. Sara Ahari, Project Manager of ADPC.

The presentations were followed by comments from different TAG members.
