In most
countries, school teachers are recognized by
the public as one of the most reliable
sources of information. In South-East Asian
countries, teachers are highly respected and
are an important community resource. Schools
are often used as emergency shelters in the
event of a disaster such as a flood, so it
is especially important for them to be used
as centers for disaster awareness raising
with a community.
The School
Flood Safety Program (SFSP) aims to utilise
schools, teachers and school children, to
increase the awareness of flood dangers
within a community and as a result increase
community disaster preparedness and minimize
deaths, especially in children. The
materials developed by the Asian Disaster
Preparedness Centre (ADPC) are a teacher
information booklet on flood safety for
children and also a set of posters aimed at
both school age children and their parents.
The posters include; actions to be take
before, during and after a flood; and
drowning prevention posters for children and
their parents.
