Dear Readers,

It is with pleasure that we offer you this issue of Asian Disaster Management News on "Role of Local Governments in Disaster Management". Our since thanks to Aman Mehta of Urban Management Center (UMC) based at the Asian Institute of Technology for contributing the "insight" article. We are also indebted to colleagues at the National Society for Earthquake Technology (NSET-Nepal) for reporting on the First Earthquake Safety Day.

At ADPC, the new year has started with a lot of activity. We had the honor to organize the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Workshop on Disaster Management in January attended by 68 disaster managers from 22 ARF participating countries. ADPC will be undertaking a number of new programs and activities in the year ahead. We hope that we will have a lot of new ideas and insights to share with you through this publication.

In the next issue, we will focus on post-disaster reconstruction issues. As always, we look forward to hearing from you. Should you have any suggestions, queries or articles to submit, please don't hesitate to drop us a line.
