El Niño / La Niña Related Sites While putting together this issue of the Asian Disaster Management News, we did an extensive Internet search for information resources on El Niño and its counterpart, La Niña. In this column we present some of the interesting sites: An article prepared by FAO/SDRN. The article contains definition and fundamental facts about ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation) with illustrations depicting periodic changes. The site provides the URL for other sites which contains more details on the situation by continent. It also contains a lengthy list of important references. This site attempts to lead to information resources related to El Niño in a more structured fashion. The site first sets out the issues overall and then points the enquirer in the direction of the most useful specialist sources. El Niño theme page: Accessing Distributed Information Related to El Niño The site is compiled jointly by NOAA and TAO. The site provides an overview of all the basic data related to El Niño. It also provides a 3 dimensional animation of El Niño temperatures. Impacts of El Niño and Benefits of El Niño Prediction The article is compiled jointly by the U.S. Dept of Commerce, NOAA,PEML and TAO. The article discusses the consequences of El Niño in two contexts: global and tropical. The site is also connected to hypertexts of the relevant illustrations, Global El Niño impacts, societal impacts, research and sites which contains detailed descriptions about the El Niño impacts on the United States and North America. This is the La Niña page of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It contains general information from the basic "what is La Niña?" to Global Sea Surface Temperature charts from the National Satellite, Data and Information Service; worldwide forecasts, and historical and current data on La Niña and El Niño events. This site focuses on the United Nations University / NCAR / UNEP-sponsored La Niña Summit, which was held from 15-17 July 1998 in Boulder, Colorado. The summit's objective was to identify what is known with some degree of reliability about La Niña and its societal and environmental impacts. The site contains an executive summary, participant list, audio recordings of the summit, and links to other La Niña sites. The site plans to post a full summary and papers presented at the summit by October 16. The International Research Institute for Climate Prediction (IRI). This site offers worldwide high resolution temperature and precipitation forecast maps, along with detailed discussions of the information presented. |
