The ADPC will organize two training courses on Community Based Disaster Management for staff of CARE Bangladesh, in Bangladesh. The main goal of this training is to train the staff of the Disaster Management Project of CARE and its Partner NGOs on Community-Based Disaster Management in order to build its capacity in implementing and piloting community-based disaster management projects in Bangladesh's disaster prone rural and urban villages. The course has been developed upon CARE Bangladesh's request. CARE Bangladesh has realized that there is a lack of awareness and skills among the staff about the concept and implementation of community based disaster management program.

Course Objectives:

At the end of a ten-day workshop, the participants will be able to:

1. Describe the disaster situation and the various disaster management activities to address the situation in Asia and Bangladesh.
2. Differentiate between the dominant and the progressive approaches in disaster management.
3. Cite the importance and features of community-based approaches to disaster management.
4. Define hazards, vulnerabilities, capacities, disaster and risk.
5. Explain at least two disaster models.
6. Outline the process of community-based approaches to risk reduction.
7. Explain why gender, culture, race and age should be considered in assessing risk.
8. Describe the process of risk assessment including hazard, vulnerability and capacity assessment.
9. Explain risk measurement based on people's perception of risk.
10. Enumerate various tools in assessing hazard, vulnerability and capacity assessment.
11. Identify at least seven strategies to reduce the risks at the village-level.
12. Describe local level risk reduction planning and training.
