Bank deterioration of Srimoti

For the last 10 years, bank deterioration of Srimoti River is rising too fast. In this year, when the vast flow of water has come, all on a sudden, breakdown of river has started and loss of land and houses has started. When it starts, people take shelter in the high land.

Last year, bank of river was totally destroyed in the turning point of the river at Patiya and it caused destruction of 35 houses. Including both side of the river, about 300 houses was destroyed. But another problem is when water comes because of vast flow of water, it makes the foundation of houses weak and causes destruction.

About 10 years ago, people got relief from the government but no one from NGO’s. Most of them have mud and bamboo houses here. So, to remove this problem, people make their houses by some critical process. They use brick in the foundation just like semi pucca houses. Someone use large plastic papers in the foundation. Again, people use bag of mud when vast flow of water starts to come in the river.

To improve the infrastructure resilience, at first a proper stable bank should be ensured here. Block of stones can be used. Proper training program should be given. To revive from the flow of water, people can make their houses just like the housing design of Chakma community of Bangladesh. Painting lower end of bamboo post with bitumen is an another solution for bamboo houses. In the mud houses, concrete stump can be used.

I believe that these system of building infrastructure resilience will be a great solution for the people and by following these system we can protect our lives, family and wealth.
