About the Films The films are educational and reinforce messages about preparing for disaster. There is currently a series of five short films covering: earthquake, tsunami, volcano, flood & landslide and social harmony (the latter is entitled ‘Two gardens’.) The heroine, ‘little girl’, demonstrates appropriate behaviour whilst also encouraging a sense of responsibility and empowerment in young children. The films are currently available in four languages: Indonesian, Tetun, Acehnese and English. How the films are to be used The ‘No Strings’ partnership has developed more than a series of films. A number of community facilitors from Aceh, Padang, Yogya, Bali, Palu and East Timor, have attended an integrated training course covering IDEP’s Community Based Disaster Management material, JRS’s peace advocacy work, and No Strings’ puppetry. They have been taught to use puppets to engage with the children in order to deepen and reinforce the educational messages in the films. The idea being that these facilitators can then provide a topical training session that is dynamic, educational and varied. The usual format of a training session is a preliminary interactive session with the puppets which introduces some of the concepts presented in the film. After showing the film (selected according to the risks of that particular community), the puppets conduct a ‘Q&A’ session to reinforce the lessons of the film - namely how the children (and community at large) may prepare for potential disaster, and how to respond in the event of a disaster. Facilitators often choose to also include games, songs and puzzles in their session. Supporting materials A range of IDEP materials are being used in conjunction with these delightful films; A Community Based Disaster Management manual for disaster preparedness – a comprehesive guide designed to empower communities to develop their own assessments and strategies for disaster management (this manual is endorsed and used by a range of bodies working in disaster management including: UNESCO, USAID, Oxfam, CHF, IOM, Bakornas (Indonesia’s national body for disaster management) and MPBI A series of comics – appealing to wide audience, these short stories reinforce instructive messages about how to prepare for disaster Public awareness poster An activity book for children with games and puzzles that focus around disater preparedness topics All these materials (including the CBDM manual) are available online (free downloads, or per unit cost for printed copies) from www.idepfoundation.org Program roll-out Following the integrated training session in September this year, attended by some 22 facilitators from all over Indonesia, these films are being rolled out across a diverse group of communities in Indonesia. During this initial phase of the project (one year until March 2007), the collective group of NGO’s has a target of reaching some 3,200 children in schools, and a further 5,000 viewers from public showings. So far the team of facilitators are ahead of schedule with the program implementation, and the partners are now considering distribution plans for the future. The films certainly have a broader application than childhood education, and IDEP and JRS are currently trialing the integration of these films into their broader training and education programs.
