Swedes Flat Fire Evacuations Lifted

Firefighters are getting the upper hand on the Swedes Flat Fire, and evacuations are being lifted.

CalFire has issued a report stating the fire is 64% contained with full containment expected by August 22, 2013. All evacuations have been lifted; however, residents are urged to proceed with caution. Although fire and utility crews will be on the roads consistently throughout the area for the next several days, anyone entering the area should be aware of their surroundings.

CalFire representatives stated that unburned islands in the middle of the fire area may continue to burn. Anyone who feels that an area may be unsafe should leave the area immediately and contact emergency personnel.

There are precautions that should be taken by residents who are returning home such as remaining alert for downed power lines and other hazards, checking propane tanks, regulators, and lines before turning on gas, and checking the residence carefully for hidden embers or smoldering fires.

The fire has burned a total of 2139 acres, which included one house and four outbuildings. There are currently 90 fire engines, 25 water tenders, and 28 bull dozers, with 9 helicopters assisting during the day. There are 1484 firefighters and other personnel involved in the firefighting efforts.

Many volunteers assisted in making the lives of the evacuees easier. Shelters were set up for the evacuees and their animals. Last night 11 people stayed in the Red Cross Shelter, with 8 remaining this morning. The animal shelters had some visitors as well. The large animal shelter housed 30 horses. At the small animal shelter there were 37 dogs, 26 cats, 13 rabbits, and 1 rooster.

What wonderful compassion and teamwork the community showed over the past few days. Many have expressed their gratitude to firefighters and others through signs at their homes and comments on Facebook.

Many just said a simple “thank you” or gave a Facebook smiley face. It is clear that all are appreciative of the efforts put forth and relieved that the down side is here.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
