GENDER AND DISASTERS While putting together this issue of the Asian Disaster Management News, we did an extensive Internet search for information resources on gender and disasters. Although there has been an upsurge in the written material on the subject, relatively little exists on the Internet on this subject. Most of the resources that do exist on the Web are HTML versions of a few print-on-paper materials. We present some of the sites here: Gender and Humanitarian Assistance, a Select Bibliography Compiled at the request of the Office of Women in Development of the U.S. Agency for International Development in November 1994, this bibliography is a survey of research on issues of gender and humanitarian assistance and aims to give an overview of what has already been discovered about assessing needs and providing assistance to women in disasters and emergencies, and during disaster mitigation and disaster recovery. Natural Hazards Observer Vol. xxi, No. 5, May 1997 This is a Special Issue of Natural Hazards Observer on "Women and Disasters" presenting a number of articles on the subject. The invited comment by Joseph Scanlon, makes a case for re-examining "disaster research using a gender viewpoint". Kristina Peterson's article brings out the gender issues in disaster response and recovery based on the field experience of the Church World Service, an organization formed after World War II to assist in restoring and rebuilding Europe. DHA News No. 22 April/ May 1997 This site presents the issue of DHA News focusing on "Women in Emergencies". The issue brings together case studies from Srebrenica, Tuzla and Rwanda and presents discussions on topics ranging from women in special development situations to refugee women's strength in exile to women's role in food aid programs. The articles, collectively, focus on dispelling the unfortunate stereotype of women solely as victims. The Role of Women in Protecting Communities for Disasters An article based on a review of activities conducted by IDNDR National Committees and other organizations for World Disaster Reduction Day in 1995 (which focused on women and children) and follow-up in 1996. APRODEV Background Paper on Gender and Emergencies This site presents a paper by Hans Zomer as a part of "The Golden Rules of GOOD Practice" series. GOOD is Gender Orientation On Development. |
