    The culminating event of the International 
    Year of Mountains 2002 was the Bishkek Global Mountain Summit, held 
    from 28 October to 1 November 2002. The Mountain Platform was a key product 
    of the summit and builds on the many substantial declarations developed at 
    other major global events on mountains. It was presented by the Government 
    of Kyrgyzstan to be forwarded to the United Nations General Assembly for 
    consideration. The purpose of the Platform is to provide guidance to 
    governments and others on how to improve the livelihoods of mountain people, 
    protect mountain ecosystems and use mountain resources more wisely. Details

    The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development 
    focuses on the development of economically and environmentally sound 
    mountain ecosystems and the improvement of living standards of mountain 
    populations, especially in the Hindukush-Himalayan region. The site provides

    is a nonprofit scientific and educational organization committed since 1972

    The United Nations World Disaster Reduction Campaigns website, hosted 
    by the UNISDR, aims at promoting, creating and increasing public awareness 
    on disaster reduction for sustainable mountain development, the theme for 
    this year’s disaster reduction campaign. The website provides electronic 
    formats of information booklets on mountains, Volcano Daily (an 
    educational booklet for children), announcements, a calendar of events and 
    other information related to mountains.
