Flood is not a curse anymore

Recently in 2014 at the early days of the month of July, few districts of Bangladesh was affected by sudden flash flood. Although there was minimum casualties, but there was substantive damage in crops, roads and inundation of critical infrastructures.

Sirajganj district is well known for flooding almost every year. Flood is a curse for the people in the district and quite often this issue is not considered as an utmost priority for the local officials.

The most effected ones are the farmers, facing a really hard time in this region as rice crop fields get inundated by the earliest monsoon struck in July. We, farmers went pale and often clueless on how to tackle this situation. Farmer Abdul Majid mentioned that; flood has now become a curse for them as the monsoon seasons seems to be never ending.

Looking for a possible solutions, the student of Dhaka University engaged with the farmers and they came up with a solution to block the retention basin, so that water do not get to enter the crop fields. As this initiation was proposed, there was no one to implement through official channels, later, the activities for protecting retention basins and building damns around the low lying roads was undertaken and conducted through engaging group of farmers and students from universities.

Initially the activities were criticized among locals, and later when the benefit started to come up, rest of people from the community came forward and engage themselves too.

In this regard, with conversation with Mr. Ajad, he mentioned that, it is a fight of our existence against natural disaster, if we win it, it’s a blessing of God and also smile for the face of farmers. We did not stopped our activities despite having criticism, we continue our work and we get to the benefits. In this way the level of water stored into retention basin, and we continue to build dams along our road. In this way we are able to save our crops and farmers were saved and four thousand farmers food were secured.

By this initiative, four thousand acres of land has been saved and that is equivalent to 60,000 mon of crop which stands up to a market price worth of 5 crore taka.

In this way by using local knowledge, we will be able to protect our assets and for that, instant idea, public awareness and improvement in information sharing and dissemination is needed.

সাম্প্রতিক ২০১৪ সালের জুলাই মাসের প্রাক্কালে বাংলাদেশের বেশ কিছু জেলা আকস্মিক বন্যায় আক্রান্ত হয়। এতে উল্লেখ করার মত হতাহত না হলেও ব্যাপক পরিমানে ফসলের ক্ষতি, যান চলাচলে দুরবস্থার সৃষ্টি, স্কুল-কলেজ-ঘরবাড়ি তলিয়ে যাওয়া সহ বিপুল পরিমানে অবকাঠামোগত ক্ষয়ক্ষতি সংঘটিত হয়। দেশের বন্যা আক্রান্ত এলাকা গুলোর মধ্যে সিরাজগঞ্জ জেলার উল্লাপাড়া উপজেলা অন্যতম। বন্যাদুর্গত অন্যান্য অঞ্চলে যখন অবস্থা মারাত্মক, কতিপয় প্রত্যুতপন্নমতি মেধাবির কল্যাণে এখানে তখন পরিস্থিতির ভিন্ন সুর ।

এ উপজেলার রামকৃষ্ণ পুর ইউনিয়নের অন্তর্গত পুস্তিগাছা, নন্দকুশা, ভট্ট মাঝুরিয়া, জালশুকা, উনুখা ও পাঠানপাড়া গ্রামের বিস্তীর্ণ মাঠগুলোতে বোপা-আমন ধানের শীষ বেরুচ্ছে কেবল। কোন কোন ক্ষেতে পাকও ধরেছে প্রায়। এরি মধ্যে জুলাইয়ের আকস্মিক বন্যা। কৃষক দিকবিদিক জ্ঞান শূন্য । চেহারা মলিন, মনটা বিমর্ষ। পুস্তিগাছার আব্দুল মজিদ দশ বিঘা জমি বর্গা নিয়ে চাষ করেছে। তার বক্তব্য “আবাগি যে পাইলে যায় কপাল হুক্যা যায়। যাক মাইনশে দেইকপ্যার পান্না তাক আল্লাও দেইকপ্যার পান্না। আশ্বিন মাস আইশা গেল এহন আবার বর্ষা । দেক তরে বাপুরে এইতা কি হাজে(অভাগা যেদিকে যায় কপাল শুকিয়ে যায়। জাকে মানুষ দেখতে পারে না তাকে আল্লাহ ও দেখতে পারে না। আশ্বিন মাস এসে গেছে এখন আবার বর্ষাকাল কিসের ! দেখ ত বাবা , এটা কি সাঁজে!)”

কৃষকের হাহুতাশ দিকে দিকে। এমতবস্থায় ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের দুর্যোগ ব্যাবস্থাপনার ছাত্র আজাদ পুস্তিগাছার কৃষক মজনু মিয়া, আব্দুল মজিদ, আব্দুল হামিদ প্রমুখদের সাথে নিয়ে আলোচনায় বসলেন। তাদের পরামর্শ দেয়া হল গ্রামের ভিতরের দিকের কালভারট গুল বন্ধ করে দিতে যেন পূর্ব চরার ধান ক্ষেত গুলতে পানি না প্রবেশ করতে পারে। তারা প্রথমে স্বীকার করে নিলেও কাজের ক্ষেত্রে কাউকে না পেয়ে অবশেষে জনাব আজাদ শলি বনানী উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ের ছাত্র আহমেদ আল জুবাইর, আহমেদ সুজন, এরশাদ, বাবু, আল-আমিন, শাওন, সোহেল সহ কয়েকজন তরুণ ছাত্রদের নিয়ে ছধান ক্ষেত ওয়ালা চরার সংলগ্ন ছোট ব্রিজ ও কালভারট গুলো বন্ধের উদ্যোগ নেন। এরপর তারা অপেক্ষাকৃত নিচু সড়ক গুলোর এক পাশ দিয়ে সরু বাধ নির্মাণ শুরু করে দেন। এ পর্যায়ে জনসাধারণও তাদের সাহায্যে এগিয়ে আসে। এ ব্যাপারে জনাব আজাদের সাথে কথা বলা হলে তিনি বলেন “প্রথম দিকে গ্রামবাসিদের অনেকেই আমাদের কার্যক্রম কে হাস্যকর মনে করেছিল। তখন আমার মনবল খানিকটা ভেঙ্গে গেলেও আমি খানিকটা জিদ চেপেছিলাম। আমার আমার সহকর্মীদের বললাম – এটা আমাদের একটা যুদ্ধ, দুর্যোগের বিরুদ্ধে মানবতার যুদ্ধ। এ যুদ্ধে আমাদের জিততে হবে। জিতলে দুইটা পরোয়ানা ।এক, আল্লাহ তালার সন্তুষ্টি। দুই, কৃষকের মুখে হাসি। না জিতলেও সমস্যা নাই। স্রষ্টার সন্তুষ্টি আমাদের জন্য অনিবার্য।– আমার সহকর্মী ছোটভাইদের বিপুল উদ্যমে আমরা কাজ চালিয়ে যেতে লাগলাম। একে একে প্রয়োজনীয় সব কয়েকটি কালভারট বন্ধ করে দিলাম। এরপর পানি আর বাড়তে লাগলো। আমরা কাঁচা সড়ক গুলির একপাশ দিয়ে সরু বাধ দেয়ার চেষ্টা করতে লাগলাম। এর পরে এল আমার আনন্দের সময়। শুরুতে যে কৃষক গুলো আমাদের উপহাস করেছিল তারাই এল আমাদের সহযোগিতা করতে। দিকে দিকে সারা পরে গেল। পুস্তিগাছা, নন্দকুশা, জালশুকা,পাঠান পাড়া সব গ্রামের কৃষক কাজে হাত দিল। রক্ষা পেল হাজার চাষির ছ’মাসের আহার। ”

সত্যিই উল্লাপাড়ায় রক্ষা পেল হাজার চাষির ছ’মাসের আহার । অত্র এলাকার ছ টি গ্রামের প্রায় ৪ হাজার বিঘা জমির ধান রক্ষা করা গেছে এতে। যাতে উৎপন্ন হয়েছে প্রায় ৬০হাজার মন ধান, যার বর্তমান বাজার মূল্য প্রায় ৫ কোটি বাংলাদেশি টাকা।

আমি বিশ্বাস করি কেবল উপস্থিত বুদ্ধি খাটিয়েই আমাদের দেশে সংঘটিত দুর্যোগ থেকে হাজার হাজার কোটি টাকার সম্পদ রক্ষা করতে পারি আমরা। এজন্য দরকার তাৎক্ষনিক ও পরিস্থিতি ভিত্তিক কিছু আইডিয়া, জনসচেতনতা এবং তথ্য ও যোগাযোগ প্রযুক্তির উন্নয়ন।
