On March 22, 2013 at 17:30 LST , tornado took place in Sadar upazilla Brahmanbaria of 8 km travelling through 20 villages at about 70 km speed per hour. 31 people killed and 500 were injured approximately. Thousands of trees and utility poles were toppled down and thousands of people were left homeless. The tornado disrupted both train and road communication and prison house of the district had been collapsed resulting in a death of a guard. Standing crops, mostly paddy were damaged as well.
Immediate Respond Plan
Since preparedness practices are absolutely little in the occurrences of tornadoes therefore rescue operation carried by local people, police, fire brigade, Red Crescent and Public Welfare department. Injured persons were admitted and taken treatment from Brahmanbaria Hospital and other local hospitals and clinics.
Two medical teams from Comilla cantonment were engaged for rendering medical services to the victims. Moreover, 300 tents were supplied to the affected area to build temporary shelter. Local leader Mr. Rabiul Moktadir Chowdhury said “Dry food distribution among 1000 affected families, each families of the dead received Tk 20,000, injured received Tk 5,000”.
My Identification
Frequencies of tornadoes are increasing due to climate change moreover prediction of Tornado is difficult than early preparedness. Strong wind breaking plantation such as bamboos and coconuts should be established to reduce wind speed in Tornado prone area.
Recommended safe distance of building construction, utility service lines (sewerage, electricity and water supply) and road communication including bridge should be planned.
Immediate rescue operation with all our efforts can minimize life and property loss.
