WORKSHOP OVERVIEW

The Asia Pacific region faces heavy human and economic losses from hydro meteorological disasters, whose frequency and intensity are drastically increasing in the recent years. The evidence from the cyclone Nargis, Cyclone Ketsana, Pakistan and Thailand floods and other events happening in the region and around the world undoubtedly reflect the level of devastation that hydro meteorological hazards can bring. Hence early warning is considered as one of the key element of disaster risk reduction. National Hydrological and Meteorological Services (NHMSs) play an important role in this aspect having mandated to observe, understand, and predict the weather and climate of the country, and provide meteorological, hydrological, and related other services to contribute to the safety and to the socio-economic sustainability of their communities.

The Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), in collaboration with National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), USA and Bjerkness Centre for Climate Research (BCCR) of Norway, will be organizing the regional training workshop on WRF modeling (ADPC Regional Training Workshop on WRF) during 24-28 September 2012 at Vietnam Institute of Meteorology, Hydrology and Environment (IMHEN) in Hanoi, Vietnam for aiming to provide necessary and useful knowledge and skills of using of the next-generation mesoscale numerical weather prediction system; the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for the benefit of institutes, researchers, students, etc. who are working on hydro-meteorological researches and early warning systems.

WORKSHOP CONTENTS

The training will consist of lectures on the components of the WRF modeling system, WRF Preprocessing System (WPS), Postprocessing software and graphical tools, Climate downscaling as well as practical sessions providing hands-on experience using the software.

REQUIREMENTS

Basic knowledge of atmospheric science and numerical modeling, as well as working in LINUX/Unix computer environment, is required for the training. Participants are strongly encouraged to work through the WRF-ARW online tutorial.
