Application of Earth Observation (EO) Data for Drought Monitoring Face to Face Training Course
Date: 10 - 14 Aug 2026
Venue: Bangkok, Thailand
COURSE OVERVIEW
COURSE OBJECTIVES
The primary goal is to bridge the gap between raw satellite data and actionable drought intelligence. Upon completion, participants will be able to:
• Identify and Access key EO data portals and open-source satellite products (Sentinel, MODIS, Landsat) relevant to hydro-meteorological hazards.
• Calculate Drought Indices including vegetation, precipitation, and soil moisture-based indicators using specialized software or cloud platforms (e.g., Google Earth Engine).
• Analyze Spatio-Temporal Trends to distinguish between seasonal variability and long-term drought intensification.
• Integrate Multi-Source Data by combining satellite imagery with in-situ (ground) meteorological station data for enhanced validation.
• Develop Drought Dashboards and reporting templates to communicate risk levels to policymakers and emergency responders.
COURSE CONTENTS
COURSE METHODOLOGIES
The course will be delivered through a "Theory-to-Terminal" approach, ensuring participants spend significant time on actual data processing.
• Interactive Lectures: Technical briefings on satellite missions and the physics of remote sensing.
• Guided Laboratory Practicals: Step-by-step computer-based tutorials where participants process real-time EO data for their specific geographic areas of interest.
• Case Study Clinics: Small groups will analyze a historic drought event
• Peer-Learning Circles: "Knowledge Cafs" where participants from different sectors discuss how drought data impacts their specific workflows.
• Capstone Project: On the final day, participants will produce a "Drought Status Report" for a chosen region, including maps, indices, and recommended actions.
TARGET PARTICIPANTS
•National and sub- national environmentalagencies
•Scientists, researchers, and analysts
•Meteorological and hydrological department staff
•Urban planners and environmental engineers
•Academics and students
•Development professionals and practitioners
