Capacity Development on Natural Disaster-Resistant Techniques of Construction and Retrofitting for Public Buildings in The People's Republic of Bangladesh

Date: 1 May 2015 - 31 Jul 2015

Department: Resilient Cities and Urban Risk Management

Donor Agency: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)

Location: Bangladesh

Description

Bangladesh is susceptible to seismic hazards due to its geographical location. A number of earthquake events in the region have caused considerable damage to life and properties. Moreover, building construction in the country is not up to the international standards. The 2013 Rana Plaza tragedy is an example of structural vulnerability in Bangladesh. Realizing the earthquake vulnerability in the region, along with weakness in the building construction process, the Bangladesh government conducted an earthquake risk assessment and it is evident that there could be major damage to the infrastructure and buildings, notably to those located in urban areas. However, current construction practices in the country is inadequate and it requires integrating earthquake resilient building construction. Apart from that it also required to enhance the technical capacity to retrofit existing buildings. In this connection it requires to design the need of further Training Programs to build capacity in this regard.

Key Activities

1) Identify the current condition of Bangladesh buildings to prepare a training schedule to address current and future conditions. 2) Identify the knowledge gaps in terms of seismic design in current construction practices in both public and private sector. 3) Identify the types of trainings required for selected groups of beneficiaries. 4) Identify target groups to be trained under this particular focus area. 5) Identify the Resource and capacity for conducting the training on regular basis both in public and private sector. 6) Design and preparation of outline on training curriculum and manual

Output

1) Training Curriculum and Manual. 2) Training materials. 3) Short Tutorial Video.
