INFORMATION

Flood Risk Reduction By Locating Weak Spots in Vulnerable Flood Protection Dikes in Selected Asian Countries

Date: 1 Jun 2012 - 31 Dec 2014

Department: Resilient Cities and Urban Risk Management

Donor Agency: NOR

Location: Regional (South and South-East Asia)

Description

Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) in cooperation with Norwegian Geotecgnical Institute (NGI) is implementing the regional program to bring stakeholders from the selected countries of Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam together in order to share knowledge, experiences, and tackle strategies to establish best practices for investigation and analysis of vulnerable dikes and rehabilitate in a cost effective manner.

The project aims to reduce the risk of flood hazards in South and Southeast Asia through capacity building and on the job training in detection of weak spots in dikes and associated flood protection structures.

Key Activities

-Data collection for flood protection dike systems and conduct geotechnical surveys along dikes/embankments to find out weak spots in the participating countries
-Interpretation of field survey data
- Arrange on- the- job training and field work
- Implementation of pilot mitigation measures on selected locations on the dike to showcase cost efficient remedial measures

Output

-Joint capacity building and exchange of experience
-Establishing a platform in terms of solutions and methodology for flood risk reduction
-Build up of expertise and competence in the organisations of participating countries for carrying out similar field investigations in other areas of the country
-Dissemination of knowledge to national and regional authorities involved in disaster mitigation
