Coastal Community Resilience and Risk-Sensitive Land Use Planning in Vietnam

Description

This project aims to address the needs of vulnerable coastal communities in Vietnam. As one of the most hazard prone countries in the region, Vietnam faces a number of challenges related to disasters and climate change. As urbanization and development are projected to continue in coastal areas of the country, it is important to address the most pressing needs of communities. With this background, the project works closely with national, provincial and local government in Vietnam to identify major challenges relating to storms, storm surge and coastal flooding in Cua Lo City. Following identification of specific challenges, a number of interventions are developed which can (but are not limited to) include: 1) Enhancing Community Awareness of Hazard Events; 2) Strengthening Early Warning Systems at Community Level; 3) Developing Guidelines for Safer Development Planning; 4) Training Programs to Increase Effectiveness of development Decisions.

Key Activities

1) Consultation Meetings with City and Provincial Authorities 2) Identify Major Hazards, areas of Climate Change Impacts and Vulnerable Communities 3) Review Land Use Planning Initiatives for Cua Lo City 4) Review Disaster Risk Management, Climate Change Adaptation and City Development Policy 5) Review of Early Warning Systems both at City and Community Level 6) Community Level Training 7) Conduct National Level Training for Coastal Community Resilience?
