ADPC Strengthening Collaboration with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of Thailand

5 Feb 2024

Bangkok, Thailand

In a significant move towards strengthening disaster resilience in Thailand, ADPC, along with its partner, the Thai Network for Disaster Resilience (TNDR), discussed with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) possible collaboration activities in 2024 to support the implementation of the Thailand National Disaster Risk Management Plan 2023-2027. This collaboration marks a critical step forward in the nation's efforts to enhance its preparedness, response, and recovery strategies in the face of increasing disaster risks.

ADPC, known for its comprehensive approach to disaster risk reduction and management across Asia, combined with the academic institutions under TNDR, will bring a wealth of expertise and technical experience to bolster Thailand's capacity to manage and mitigate the impacts of natural disasters.

The collaboration will focus on several key areas:

  • Capacity Building: Enhancing the skills and capabilities of DDPM officials and local disaster management authorities through national standardized training programs and workshops.
  • Community Engagement: Empowering communities at the grassroots level to participate actively in disaster risk reduction activities, ensuring that local knowledge and needs are integrated into planning and response efforts.
  • Technology and Innovation: Leveraging advanced technology and innovative practices to improve disaster risk assessment, early warning systems, and information management, making disaster response more efficient and effective.

Bill Ho, Director of ADPC Academy, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, "Collaboration is key to building disaster resilience. By joining forces with the DDPM, we aim to enhance Thailand's ability to safeguard its communities and sustain its development achievements against the backdrop of an increasingly unpredictable climate.

"DDPM expressed its commitment to the initiative, highlighting the partnership's role in achieving a safer, more resilient Thailand. The collaboration with ADPC is a testament to our dedication to strengthening our nation's disaster risk management capacities. Together, we will work towards a future where Thailand is better prepared to face and bounce back from disasters.
