On 15 February 2023, representatives from Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), Purdue Policy Research Institute (PPRI), and LASER PULSE convened as part of an institutional exchange on Embedded Research Translation (ERT). The meeting took place as part of a project on 'Evaluation of Community-Based Disaster Risk Management (CBDRM) Programs for BHA/East Asia and the Pacific (EAP)' supported by the United States Agency for International Development Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID BHA) and LASER Pulse.

The insightful session included presentations from ADPC, the LASER PULSE team, and PPRI. Hans Guttman, Executive Director, ADPC, initiated the session with an overview of ADPC and how since its establishment with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), the organization has partnered with various universities and academia. He emphasized the need for research to consolidate the efficacy of ADPC programmatic focuses through a data-driven approach.

Betty Bugusu, Technical Director, LASER PULSE, elaborated on how the consortium is a cooperative agreement between various universities through USAID's Innovation, Technology, and Research (ITR) hub. She explained that LASER PULSE works in collaboration with academic researchers, development practitioners, policymakers, and donors to develop research that can be modeled into evidence-based solutions to development challenges.

The presentation concluded with Stacey Connaughton, PPRI, Purdue University, who explained how the university promotes research in strategic focus areas such as defense, security, health, wellbeing, sustainability, and peacebuilding with the perspective that these areas are interrelated and have the potential for collaboration. She also concluded that Purdue University catalyzes research by investing in PARI Global Development which is a platform that invests in mobilizing researchers and academia for international development.

It was followed by group discussions to identify future areas of collaboration between disaster management practitioners and academic researchers utilizing the Embedded Research Translation process.
