Asian Disaster Preparedness Center has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of Bihar in India to provide technical support during the implementation of the Bihar Roadmap for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015–2030).

The roadmap targets the causes of disaster impacts and aims to lessen disaster-related deaths by 75 percent by 2030.

With funding and guidance from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, ADPC will build the capacity of Bihar’s government officials on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into development planning with a special focus on the agricultural and health sectors. ADPC will also support the establishment of an institutional disaster risk management resource center in Bihar to address the state’s capacity building and knowledge management needs in disaster risk reduction.

Dr. Jingjai Hanchanlash, ADPC's Executive Director a.i., and Principal Secretary, Disaster Management Department, Government of Bihar, Shri Vyas Ji exchanging copies of the MoU in presence of the Honorable Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Nitish Kumar, and Honorable Minister of Disaster Management Professor Chandrashekhar.

Dr. Jingjai Hanchanlash, ADPC’s Executive Director a.i. and Shri Vyas Ji, Principal Secretary, representing the Disaster Management Department of Government of Bihar signed the MoU.

The MoU signing ceremony took place in the presence of the Honorable Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Nitish Kumar, and Honorable Minister of Disaster Management Professor Chandrashekhar.

Located in Eastern India bordering Nepal, the Bihar state is particularly prone to flooding, drought, and cyclonic storms – with occasional fires and hailstorms as well as a risk of seismic events. By 2030, the government wants to halve the number of people affected by disasters and the economic losses caused by natural hazards.

Subsequent to the MoU signing ceremony, an official stakeholders’ meeting for Bihar DRR Roadmap implementation took place. ADPC and BMGF representatives also provided their inputs regarding the role and support that is to be provided under this cooperation with the Government of Bihar.
