FLOOD AWARENESS
AND EDUCATION
Well designed public communication campaigns can contribute enormously in educating the public and in conveying the intended message over a large geographical area to a vast and diversified audience. Raising the awareness of communities on hazards and risks they are exposed to and what they can do at the individual household level to mitigate or minimize those risks can transform them from passive to active participants of wider disaster risk reduction scenario. Highly aware communities understand the benefits of disaster preparedness and feel empowered to support or take over risk reduction initiatives in their locality, thereby increasing the community ownership and sustainability, paving the way for greater resilience.
Since 2004, the FMMP Component 4 has
effectively implemented awareness raising initiatives in various forms;
IEC (Information, Education and Communication) materials development and
distribution, organizing cultural shows and sector specific activities
like school flood safety programs. |
