Opening ceremony of 36th Regional Training Course on Disaster Management

Presided by Dr. Bhichit Rattakul, Executive Director a.i. and Dr. Luis Jorge Perez-Calderon, Deputy Executive Director, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, the opening ceremony of 36th Regional Training Course on  Disaster Management was held on 5th November 2007 at the Amari Don Muang Hotel, Bangkok,  Thailand. There are 34 participants from INGOs, Government organization, UN agencies and Red Cross Societies who are the representatives of 16 countries namely People Republic of China,  lao PDR , Myanmar, Thailand , Malaysia, Indonesia , Papua New Guinea,  Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, India , Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kenya , Germany , United Kingdom. After briefing a course introduction by Dr. Peerz, course director of DMC-36, Dr. Bhichit has welcomed the participants and delivered the opening remarks of DMC-36.  This time, 10 delegates from Indonesia has participated to the course; special guests of honour from People Republic of Indonesia, Mrs. Tanti Widyastuti Hendratono, Minister-Counsellor (Information) and some ADPC colleagues have attended the opening ceremony of DMC-36.  The ceremony concluded with the self-introduction of participant, followed by votes of thanks from Mr. Falak Nawaz, Course Manager and manager of Training Resource Group.

The first day of the course was nicely ended with the welcome cocktail reception in the evening at the Amari Don Muang Hotel.

The aim of DMC-36 course is to provide comprehensive disaster management knowledge and skills to enhance the capabilities of executive managers who have key disaster management responsibilities.  It is designed to enable professionals working in disaster management, development and donor agencies to effectively integrate disaster management into their development programs and policies. Participants will be encouraged to develop key skills and adopt proactive attitudes through participation in interactive lectures and reflection on a range of key issues raised during discussions and practical activities.

By completing the DMC course, the participants will learn how to:

  • develop effective strategies and systems for disaster prevention, mitigation, response and recovery

  • apply risk management processes in order to identify, assess and deal with disaster risk assessment

  • utilize an emergency coordination center to manage disaster events

  • assess key implementation issues and requirements in disaster management

This course consists of 4 modules and each having a focus to improve clarity of presentation and linkages among topics and issues of discussion. The themes for each module are:

Module 1:       Defining the Problem
Module 2:       Preparedness Planning
Module 3:       Emergency Response
Module 4:       Making Disaster Management Work

It also encourages participants to think creatively and utilizes contemporary adult learning methods, including:

  • Interactive lectures

  • Instructional games

  • Field work/Workshop

  • Video shows

  • Group Work

  • Classroom exercises

  • Presentations

  • Discussions

  • Research

  • Exercise/ Simulation Activities

The during of three weeks of the course, participants will have not only the opportunity of learning a comprehensive knowledge of disaster risk reduction and preparedness concepts but also expanding the wider networking among the disaster management practitioners around the world and sharing each other the knowledge on the practical experiences and lessons learned. Eventhough the three week DMC course is quite intensive, participants will be also enjoying the night life of Pattaya and relax on the beautiful beach of Pattaya after the sessions on the second week.
