COURSE SCHEDULE

This course is a pure face-to-face course. It will take place from 13 to 17 July 2026.

COURSE OVERVIEW

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Integrated Flood Risk Management in the context of climate change and increasing flood impacts. It combines conceptual foundations with practical tools to assess flood hazards, vulnerabilities, and risks, and to estimate climate-related loss and damage. Through applied sessions, participants explore early warning systems, impact-based forecasting, nature-based solutions, and emergency response planning. The course also addresses gender and social inclusion, governance and transboundary challenges, and the flood–poverty nexus to support climate-resilient, context-specific flood management strategies.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Strengthen understanding of flood risk dynamics
Enhance participants’ knowledge of flood hazards, exposure, and vulnerability in the context of changing climatic conditions and human-induced factors.

Promote integrated flood risk reduction approaches
Build capacity to apply holistic and multi-sectoral strategies that combine structural and non-structural measures for effective flood risk management.

Bridge theory and practice in flood management
Enable participants to link theoretical frameworks with practical tools and hands-on exercises drawn from international and local flood management experiences.

Introduce innovative solutions for flood challenges
Expose participants to emerging and innovative approaches that address complex flood risks and reduce social, economic, and environmental impacts.

Enhance planning and implementation capacity
Support participants in designing and implementing context-specific flood risk management solutions that contribute to long-term resilience and sustainability.

COURSE METHODOLOGY

The course follows a participatory and practice-oriented methodology combining expert-led presentations, interactive discussions, and hands-on exercises. Learning is structured around real-world case studies to translate integrated flood risk management concepts into practical application. Group work and guided exercises enable participants to assess flood risks, develop management plans, and apply tools such as early warning systems and nature-based solutions. Cross-cutting themes including gender, governance, and transboundary issues are embedded throughout the sessions to ensure holistic learning and practical relevance.

TARGET PARTICIPANTS

The course is designed for government officials, UN and affiliated staff, development practitioners, planners, engineers, and technical professionals involved in flood risk management, climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction, and water resources management at national and sub-national levels.
