Faced with climate change and variability, stakeholders in development need to address in an integrated way the concerns, which are common to both the fields of adaptation and disaster risk management. In doing so, some key priorities for sustainable development can be identified. Simply reducing the uncertainty of climate projections cannot fully support adaption without strongly appreciating the global trends of population increase and its associated land and water use changes.

Being forced to embrace uncertainty and complexity, stakeholders urgently need to develop effective strategies for change processes that affect communities, organizations and institutions. To address these issues, in partnership with Wageningen Centre of Development Innovation, ADPC is pleased to announce the special training course on managing risk in the face of climate change from March 18-29, 2019.

This course will give you the opportunity to become a manager of change. Your capacity to encourage adaptation to changing climate-related hazards and improved resilience and disaster preparedness will be enhanced. The course will explore trends in disaster risk, the related factors contributing to the complexity of the planning environment, and the uncertainty and variability of climate change.

The programme has an interactive nature and incorporates group work, case studies, interactive lectures, discussions, presentations and excursions to offer background, theoretical aspects, as well as practical approaches. Resource persons from different disciplines will expose you to a broad range of domains.

The programme is flexible to suit your needs and issues raised. The course includes:

1. Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) and Disaster Risk Management (DRM)
A general introduction and conceptual foundation to the link between climate change adaptation and disaster risk management.

2. Integrating CCA and DRM
You will get the opportunity to examine first-hand a social problem, and to explore how resilience might be characterized/achieved against climate change challenges and current disaster risks.

3. ‘Framing’ the Problem.
The course highlights tools for examining the perspectives of different stakeholders over the priority given for disaster risk and climate change, the range of acceptable actions to manage risk, and other important aspects of decision making.

4. ‘Framing’ the Possible Solutions.
Tools for planning interventions to promote both disaster risk management and climate change adaptation goals are presented.

5. Influencing Policy for Adaptation and Disaster Risk Management.
The approach to risk communication is discussed and you can practice communicating intervention strategies to a variety of stakeholders with differing perspectives, and getting their ‘agreement’ to adopt their proposed strategies.

This training programme is designed for managers, policy makers, specialists and researchers who are professionally involved in the management of risks and hazards and climate change; they may work in public and civic society sectors, for universities, national research or development programmes, for government organisations or NGOs. You need at least have 3 years professional experience and proficiency in English is required.
