Building Resilience Together: NDMA Maldives and ADPC Strengthen Partnership

20 Nov 2024

Bangkok, Thailand

In a step toward fortifying disaster resilience in the Maldives, Ms. Safeenaz Hassan, Secretary General of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Maldives, visited the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) headquarters in Bangkok on 20 November 2024. This significant meeting highlighted the enduring partnership between the two organizations, focusing on innovative Disaster Risk Management (DRM) approaches tailored to the unique vulnerabilities of the Maldives as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS).

The Maldives, renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, faces profound challenges from rising sea levels, coastal erosion, and increasingly severe weather patterns. These existential threats demand urgent national action and robust international collaboration. During her visit, Ms. Hassan engaged with ADPC leadership to discuss national priorities that could inform future programming, including the need for climate resilience, disaster preparedness, and strategies that center on inclusivity and sustainability.

A central theme of the discussions was mobilizing resources to strengthen the Maldives’ capacity to prepare for and respond to disasters. Among the opportunities explored was continuing the Sustainable National Anticipatory Action Program (SNAP) in South Asia, supported by USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID-BHA). This program, with its focus on proactive disaster management, offers immense potential to empower the Maldives with tools and strategies to anticipate and mitigate risks before they escalate.

The meeting also highlighted the Maldives’ potential inclusion in the Asian Preparedness Partnership (APP), a regional platform fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange. Such participation would enable the Maldives to access best practices and innovative solutions from neighboring countries while contributing its unique perspective as a SIDS navigating complex climate challenges.

Another compelling topic was advancing women’s leadership in disaster risk reduction. Recognizing the critical role women play in resilience-building, discussions centered on developing programs that amplify women’s voices and leadership in DRM initiatives. This approach aligns with global efforts to promote gender equality and strengthens the social fabric needed to navigate disasters effectively.

Ms. Hassan’s visit symbolized the deepening ties between NDMA Maldives and ADPC, underscoring their shared vision for a safer, more resilient Maldives. The collaboration aims to blend local knowledge with regional expertise, ensuring that the Maldives is equipped to face today's challenges while preparing for tomorrow's uncertainties. This partnership stands as a beacon of hope for sustainable resilience in one of the world’s most vulnerable nations.
