(M.S.K.) Intensity scales and the epicenters of earthquakes of magnitude greater than 5.0 (on Richter scale) and tectonic features; Cyclone and Wind Hazard Maps showing the basic wind speed zones and the estimated height of storm surges in coastal areas; and Flood Prone and Protected Area Maps including areas liable to flooding, maximum probable precipitation and flooding in coastal areas. Scenario for a Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake on the Hayward Fault. 1996. 120pp. US$15.00. Order from EERI, 499 14th Street, Suite 320, Oakland, CA 94612-1934, USA. fax: (1) (510) 451-5417.

Scenario for a Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake on the Hayward Fault demonstrates how a scientifically credible scenario can be used to create awareness of and gain support for comprehensive programs to reduce earthquake losses. The document contains original full-color maps and photographs that trace the rupture along the Hayward fault (San Francisco Bay Area, US)- a geographic region of 6.5 million people- graphically illustrating damage to specific bridges and highways, water and power systems, residential and commercial buildings, and highlighting areas subject to landslides and ground failure. By identifying the most vulnerable areas and structures, it provides the information needed to develop programs that will reduce future losses and speed recovery.
