Report on UNDP China project on providing two ADPC experts to work in China

As per an invitation from UNDP China, ADPC provided two experts to work with the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs between October and November 2002, one on preparation of a training manual and conducting a training course, and the other on resource mobilization for disaster rehabilitation.

As the chief trainer for the project, Mr. Merrick Chatfield, Director of Regional Programs of ADPC worked closely with the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs to conduct a workshop on Disaster Relief using a specially developed training manual in Nanning of Guangxi Province between 26th and 28th October 2002. More than eighty Civil Affairs officials at national and provincial levels participated in the workshop. The workshop was very successful.

Mr. Robin Willison, Director of Technical Services produced a proposal on flood rehabilitation and capacity building for disaster risk management. Before drafting of the proposal, Robin visited some flood-affected areas of Hunan province arranged and accompanied by officials of the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs and Hunan Provincial Department of Civil Affairs. Robin also visited representatives of donor agencies in Beijing as per UNDP China’s arrangements. The objectives of the proposal are to request emergency funding for flood disaster rehabilitation, and to establish a pilot training center for natural hazard risk management in Hunan Province. The UNDP China is handling raising funds for the proposal.
