Making future agriculture resilient in Myanmar

Asian Disaster Preparedness Center and the Yezin Agricultural University hosted a three-day learning workshop on mainstreaming disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into the agriculture sector in Myanmar. Organized in mid-November, the workshop focused on innovative solutions and approaches to protecting livelihoods from the impact of the climate change.

The workshop was participated by high-level officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of Myanmar, along with other government agencies, featuring insightful presentations on the impact of disasters and climate change on the agriculture sector in Myanmar. Participants agreed on the importance of mainstreaming disaster risk reduction into the sector to secure livelihoods in times of disasters.


The workshop was participated by high-level officials from the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation of Myanmar, along with other
government agencies.


Demonstrating key challenges related to hydro-meteorological hazards such as flooding and cyclones, Daw Han Swe, Staff Officer from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, emphasized on the need for greater partnerships between government sectors to ensure that disaster risks are assessed and addressed effectively.

Since 2004, ADPC has worked in close collaboration with the Government of Myanmar under the regional Mainstreaming DRR into Development Policy, Planning and Implementation program funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Government of Australia.

Under the program, ADPC is developing a comprehensive documentation of the initiatives carried out in Myanmar to mainstream disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into the agriculture sector with recommendations on future activities to build resilience.
