Systems that track country implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 must be available in different languages to ensure that all disaster practitioners can access information and make their own contributions.

Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) with support from Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Interior and Safety has translated the ‘An orientation to using the online Sendai Framework Monitor’ course into Korean. The e-Learning course was launched by ADPC and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in 2019 to train government officials and relevant stakeholders involved in reporting national progress using the online Sendai Framework Monitor (SFM) developed by UNDRR.

The e-Learning course comprises of video lectures, online Monitor tutorials, discussion boards, and short assessments to familiarize participants with the SFM’s features and required information.

Mr. Timothy Wilcox, Program Management Officer at UNDRR Asia-Pacific, endorsed the new language feature. “The translation of the Sendai Monitor E-Learning course into Korean is a significant step towards making the E-learning course more accessible to member states,’ he said.

Mr. Wilcox also noted the anticipated benefits of the translation. ‘It will help strengthen the Republic of Korea’s ability to orientate its staff to using the system online without the need for travel to undertake training workshops,’ he said.

He also applauded the timeliness of the translation. ‘Being able to give practical assistance to members states online is even more important now with the COVID-19 pandemic,’ he added.
