Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC) and its partners conducted a four-and-a-half-day training course on child-centered disaster risk management in Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China on 25–29 September 2017.

Mr. HU Junfeng, Director of Disaster Preparedness Division of Department of Disaster Relief under Ministry of Civil Affairs of China, Dr. WANG Chao, Country Director of Save the Children China and Mr. LIN Sheng, Vice President of Fuzhou University opened the training course. Thirty-four civil affairs officials from provinces, cities and a county as well as from Fuzhou University attended the course. Dr. TANG Zhenpeng, Dean of School of Economics and Management of Fuzhou University chaired the opening ceremony.

Organized with main funding support from the Save the Children China, the nine-unit course focused on child-centered disaster risk management, covering the basic terms and concepts in disaster management. The course also dealt with community-based disaster risk management and how to establish a community-based organization; participatory disaster risk assessment and its tools; and community-based disaster risk management planning, monitoring, evaluation and training.

The units were delivered in three classroom learning days, a one-day exercise in a community in Fuzhou and a visit to Minqing County of Fujian Province that was destroyed by the flash flood on 9 July 2016.

Mr. Hans Guttman, Executive Director of ADPC joined the exercise together with participants in a selected community in Fuzhou. He also attended the closing ceremony and distributed certificates together with Mr. CHEN Bojia, Vice President of Sichuang Software Company to the participants who completed the course.
