The Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, hosted a public event to showcase the findings of the Metro Colombo Flood Risk Assessment Project. The initiative outlined current flood risks in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and the effects future mitigation efforts would have on those risks.

To promote flood resilient development in the city the findings will be included in the upcoming City Development Strategy for the Colombo Metropolitan Region.

The event opened the floor to attendees so they could ask questions and better understand the findings of the Metro Colombo Flood Risk Assessment Project.


The event shared that flood risk reduction interventions, such as improving the drainage systems, flood early warning and creating policy that promotes better land use planning in addition to other interventions, can greatly reduce the impacts of flood on the city.

The assessment was carried out by the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, with technical assistance provided by the Consortium of Deltares from the Netherlands, Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), and Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) in Sri Lanka.

Around 150 officials and professionals from different government departments including a large team of Engineers from Sri Lanka Land Reclamation & Development Corporation attended the event at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Mr. D.M.K.S. Dissanayake, Director (Technical), Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development inaugurated the event and Ms. A.H. Thushari, Project Director, MCUDP was also in attendance.
