Glimpses from
the Disaster Risk Reduction Rally; Children
Drawing Competition
4 Nov 2008
Past disaster
evidence has shown that children are the most
vulnerable group when it comes to losing lives
and children also make the best advocates to
raise awareness and communicate early warning
signals. Concept of disaster and its impact on
the society can be reflected very clearly from
children's perspective. They not only depict the
damage and loss but are able to successfully
draw the complete scenario of immediate relief
and rehabilitation.
In Commemoration of UN-International Day for
Disaster Risk Reduction-08, two cities of
Bangladesh, Cox's Bazar & Jamalpur celebrated
the event on the 15 & 20 Oct respectively, with
the active participation of local government,
NGOs, CBOs and community members. Both the
cities have realized the importance of
mainstreaming children in DRR. On this occasion,
local government had invited school children to
participate in a drawing competition with DRR as
the broad theme. This event recognized that
Children are very aware of Disaster and Risk
Reduction measures.
