On Monday 30 Apr, a handover
ceremony for the Tourism Risk Management
strategy plan by the Asian Disaster
Preparedness Centre or ADPC was held at
Royal Phuket City Hotel where they also
discussed about the past tsunami and how to
reduce risks in tourism, for the future.
The ceremony was conducted by
the Acting Director to the Asian Disaster
Preparedness Centre, Dr Bhichit Rattakul, who
handed over to the Phuket Governor, Nirund
Galayanamit, a complete file of
comprehensive evacuation prepardness plans
and maps he has drawn up with several local
communities including villages, schools, and
hospitals, over the past 2 years.
He explained that the
strategy was divided in two paths. First the
government sector had to work closely with
the public in coordination to work out the
strategy plan, to support wants and needs of
the tourists. Second was to develop plans
and regulations to fit with tourist
destinations of each organization, to
produce a tangible outcome.
Dr Bhichit Rattakul also told
us about the topics discussed at the
seminar:
The purpose of this seminar
was also to develop the skills and
experience of authorities to increase their
working ability in case of unpredictable
incidents. Phuket is taken as the first
pioneer for this strategy in covering risk
management in natural disasters and man-made
disasters.
However Dr Bhichit also
indicated some problems that were found on
the island at the moment:
After the seminar
participants should be able to see some
important aspects of the tourism industry
and economy often overlooked, as well as
ensure security for tourists and residents
to prepare and be ready to handle any future
incidents.
