Partnerships for Disaster Reduction in South East Asia (PDR-SEA) Updates
Creative vs. Technical Writing? Which writing style is most effective for case studies – creative or technical? This question was asked during the Case Study Writing Workshop conducted from 9-11 January 2002 in Bangkok. The workshop aimed at building the capacity of DIPECHO partners in Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, the Philippines and Vietnam in documenting best practices in community based disaster management (CBDM). Participants learned the elements and
processes of case writing, and skills to identify innovations and
lessons in their CBDM programs. Participants applied these skills by
writing feature articles, which were termed “caselets”. A common
case study format or template was also developed for further sharing. Workshop for ASEAN Regional Program in Disaster Management The ASEAN Secretariat, in collaboration with ADPC, and with funding support from the European Commission on Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) and AusAID, held a regional workshop from 25-27 March 2002 in Bangkok, Thailand, for the development of the ASEAN Regional Program on Disaster Management. The workshop gathered key officials of national disaster management offices of the ten ASEAN member countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. The ASEAN Regional Program will be tabled at the 12th AEGDM (ASEAN Experts Group on Disaster Management) Meeting in August 2002 in Hanoi, Vietnam. While reviewing decisions taken at the 9th and 10th Meetings, the 11th AEGDM Meeting in August 2000 in Chiang Rai, Thailand, recognized the priority development of the ASEAN Regional Program on Disaster Management in order to improve AEGDM’s effectiveness in coordinating and promoting cooperation in disaster management among countries of the ASEAN region and its partners. The program will serve as an integrated framework, outlining regional strategies, priority areas and activities, to guide ASEAN cooperation in disaster management in the coming years. The decision to hold the workshop was made at the South East Asian Working Group meeting on Regional Cooperation held on 29-30 October 2001 and endorsed by the 2nd meeting of the ADPC Consultative Committee meeting on Regional Cooperation (RCC2) held immediately thereafter from 31 October to 2 November.
