Third RCC to Focus on Droughts

The third meeting of the ADPC Regional Consultative Committee (RCC3) will be held from 29-31 October 2002 in New Delhi, India. The meeting is being co-hosted by the Government of India. Apart from reviewing actions taken on recommendations at previous meetings, report on progress made on national and sub-regional initiatives, and follow-up actions related to flood management and mitigation, a special session will be devoted to the theme of “drought management”. This session will focus on sharing experiences, ongoing and planned national, regional and international initiatives, and drought management and lessons learned by participating RCC member countries. Over 30 participants from more than 15 countries around the world are expected to participate.


The Second Inter-regional Training Course on Public Health and Emergency Management in Asia and the Pacific (PHEMAP-2)

The Second Inter-regional Training Course on Public Health and Emergency Management in Asia and the Pacific (PHEMAP-2) will be held from 7-18 October 2002 and will focus on medical aspects of emergency management. This second course is being funded by the World Health Organization (WHO). The participating countries include Cambodia, East Timor, India, Indonesia, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. 

The PHEMAP courses cover technical, managerial and policy aspects of emergency management in the health sector. The first of the series held in March 2002 was funded by the Japan International Cooperation for Welfare Services (JICWELS), and the Regional Offices of the World Health Organization (WHO) for East Asia (SEARO) and the Western Pacific (WPRO). The course aims at helping countries of the region to develop more effective policy, procedures, plans, guidelines and standards of best practice for health sector emergency management.


Workshop on “Fencing Floods in South Asia: Disaster Preparedness through Risk Communication”

A Regional Media and Policy Workshop on “Fencing Floods in South Asia: Disaster Preparedness through Risk Communication” will be held from 16-19 December 2002 in Islamabad, Pakistan. The workshop will highlight perspectives and experiences on flood preparedness in South Asia. It is being jointly organized by the Rural Development Policy Institute, Journalists Resource Center, ITDG South Asia, Meteorology Department of Pakistan and ADPC.

Workshop participants will include representatives of the media, governments of South Asian countries, international donors, universities, research institutions, and organizations working on disasters. Abstracts for papers are invited on these themes:

  • Geophysical Profile of South Asia: Connections and Contradictions (university or research institution from a South Asian country)
  • Floods in South Asia: Country Profiles – causal factors and processes of vulnerability; flood control measures; land-use regulations; building regulations; forecasting, monitoring and warning systems; population relocation; evacuation plans and arrangements; emergency equipment, facilities and material; damage; government response; major flood events; gaps in implementation and suggestions for improvement
  • Common Threat, Common Response: Intra- and inter-government-level sharing of flood-related information in South Asia; People-to-people experience-sharing; Media, government and communities at risk

The deadline for submitting abstracts is 30 September 2002. Authors will be requested to submit full papers by 31 October 2002. Abstracts should not be more than 700 words. Paper presenters will be provided with travel to the workshop, board, lodging and a modest honorarium.
